Bimonthly Literacy Events for Families:
- Family Literacy Nights: These events includes a dinner, a read-aloud story by our Literacy Coordinator, and a series of Literacy Stations that include puppet making, book making, and letter recognition.
Celebration of Dr. Seuss’s Birthday: Held annually in March, the celebration includes a dinner, a variety of readings from Dr. Seuss by our Literacy Coordinator dressed up as The Cat In The Hat, and a birthday cake.
Jumpstart’s Read for the Record: Initiated in 2006, the nationally acclaimed organization Jumpstart’s Read for the Record event aims to set the record for the most children reading the same book on the same day.
Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) day: Family Connections’ families participate in the national D.E.A.R. Day, a special reading celebration on April 12th to remind and encourage families to make reading together on a daily basis a family priority.
Author Study: Through this new program developed by our Literacy Coordinator, a book series is selected and read throughout the year. The project culminates in a Celebration Night dinner with families all reading books from the series. Each child is also given two of the books from the series to take home for their personal library.
Jumpstart’s Early Literacy Initiative: Jumpstart’s Corps Members come to Family Connections twice a month to provide interactive workshops with our children and parents/caregivers in literacy activities and modeling appropriate reading techniques for parents/caregivers. An example of one workshop included a reading of Maurice Sendak’s “Where The Wild Things Are;” Jumpstart teachers dressed up in costumes of each of the characters.
Free Books from First Book National Book Bank: Family Connections distributes books to our families provided by First Book, a nonprofit organization that gives children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. They provide an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs.
